Gas is under $4.00. I filled up at 3.97 today (in Austin) and 3.87 the other day in the country, driving back from Houston (I'll get to that in a moment). So--that's a nice thing.
I got here Friday night. And had planned to fly in at the same time as my friend Jen from Minneapolis. Well, I got to Austin, to find out that American Airlines had fired 6000 people in the last 24 hours, which resulted in a whole bunch of flights being cancelled including hers! She didn't even know until she got TO the airport to check her baggage. She hasn't been able to to get here since either. She's pretty upset about it, and is trying to get a flight somehow, but I don't think she's having much luck. I'm prepared to spend the week here alone--and even though it would be fun to have her here, I'm really okay with being on my own too. But, I'm lamenting that she isn't here, because we would have had a blast together. But God obviously had another plan.
So, Friday night I wanted to go to the fireworks and orchestra in Austin. Jen and I had planned to go in there, and meet up with my friend Cameron. But since Jen didn't make it, Cameron and I went in on our own. This is going to lead to a lot more questions from a bunch of you, since I met Cameron on eHarmony. It was the first time we'd met in person. He's a super nice guy, a police officer, and very similar to me in temperament--which is interesting to watch from the outside, understanding that type of personality so well. He's equally as quiet as he is talkative. Sounds just like me doesn't it? So...I'm enjoying getting to know him. We plan to meet up one or two more times this week while I'm here. I'll get to that later on.
Anyway, we went and enjoyed the fireworks and orchestra. It was quite the show.
Then, my friend Lori was supposed to come out for the weekend from Houston. I met Lori at Passion in DC in February. But she called me on Saturday morning, and had to unexpectedly work on Saturday. So, we decided instead that I should go out to Houston. So, Saturday afternoon, after having lunch with Amy and Dale (the couple I met last time in Austin) I drove out to Houston.
Houston is an interesting city in that it looks an awful lot like New Jersey. I have to be honest and say that I wasn't really impressed by Houston itself--but had a blast there with Lori and her friends. She took me to a BBQ at her friends house and I met about 12 or 15 of her friends. They are just great people. It was so fun.
On Sunday I went to church with her, and then out to lunch with the same group of people, plus a few. AND...since I was in Houston, I connected with a friend that I went to college with!! This is Bethany, she was in choir with me and was our accompanist as well. She is by far, the best pianist I know. You can put anything in front of her, and she can play it. So it was really fun to see her again.
This is me and Lori, and Ryan. I met Ryan in DC at Passion too, so it was fun to catch up with him as well.
Sunday afternoon I headed back to Austin. It's about a 3 hour drive, so it isn't that bad. And on the way I passed through a town named for me apparently! :)
The weather here has been really nice. Mid to high 90's, the humidity is not that high. I wouldn't want to sit outside a whole lot, but it is bearable, as opposed to Houston which is unbelievably humid--being on the coast and all. It was too hot for me there.
When I got back last night, I met up with Cameron to go to church with him.
Then today, I had plans to meet up with my FAVORITE tool customer. Gary. :) It was super fun to meet him in person, and I found out that he is a Christian! So, that was nice to find out too. He wants to make it up to Maine at some point to see our shop, so I hope that he does.
Currently, I'm sitting at a coffee shop in Austin to use their internet--tonight I'm heading to a Mary Kay meeting and try to get connected down here in that way. I'm looking forward to it.
I'll blog a few more times throughout the week--from coffee shops. :)
